"Eat Real Food!"

The Kellyn Foundation is doing something awesome.

They visit local elementary and middle schools and educate kids about real, fresh, local and healthy food...

Let the kids try some...

And then help to plant community gardens at their school!

I was lucky enough to get hooked up with Meagan Grega and Eric Ruth, the founders of Kellyn (which I'm told means "Warrior Princess") at a local screening of the film Fresh in February.  It was a refreshing night to be a community activist with an interest in integrated ecosystems!  The crowd that gathered represented all manner of positive, supportive ventures happening around here, especially with regard to promoting fresh, local, healthy, "real" food.

In March I spent a day with Meagan and Eric at Donegan Elementary, which is near where I live.  Their programs were engaging and full of information, but not so much as too overwhelm the students.  It definitely got them curious about the concept of "real food" vs.  the processed stuff, and they were practically jumping out of their seats to ask and answer questions or share personal experiences.

In April, I had hoped to join them for a "seed day," where students are given vegetable seedlings to plant.  Unfortunately the weather didn't agree.  But I'm looking forward to participating in their "Garden as a Classroom" program later this spring and summer, which is meant to "get kids excited and involved in growing their own food."

Like I said.  Awesome.
